The Kelpies

Falkirk, Scotland

The Kelpies are two large horse heads in Falkirk, Scotland; modelled on two well-known Clydesdale horses — Baron and Duke. The famous Kelpies stand at 30 metres tall (98 feet) and the impressive sculpture was designed by Andy Scott. According to Scottish legend, Kelpies are ‘shape-shifting aquatic spirits’, made to appear like horses and often found around lochs. They have stood proudly in Helix Park since 2014 and attract worldwide visitors. Each head weighs over 300-tonnes and they are a true art and engineering success; the Kelpies are complete with a huge wire frame and 928 flat steel panels.

The enormous sculpture is easy to find and get to and the best part… they are free to visit. You can visit any time and any day of the year and can be a quick passing visit or part of a longer walk around Helix Park. At night, you will see the Kelpies lit up with plenty of LED lights, which is an amazing sight, however, they are impressive whatever time of day you visit. The site is easily accessible to anyone and is pushchair and wheelchair friendly. Nearby the Kelpies, you will also find a gift shop and a cafe.
