Saltburn Cliff Tramway

Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Redcar and Cleveland

Saltburn Cliff Tramway is in the beautiful seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, located in Redcar and Cleveland. While the town is in North Yorkshire, this area actually belongs to the North East region of England.

The tramway, also known as a funicular, was designed by George Croydon Marks and opened in June 1884; the tramway replaced an existing vertical structure that was designed by a railway contractor, John Anderson. The idea behind the original vertical hoist was to solve the problem of visitors being able to go up and down the cliff, but eventually was deemed unsafe – this lead to the planning and installation of the new (and current) structure. Saltburn’s funicular is still in use today and for the exact reason that it first began, to allow visitors to make it from the bottom of the cliff to the town, or vice versa.

The Saltburn Cliff Tramway is much loved by visitors and is a must-see landmark if you are planning a trip to the area; the tramway is accessible to all, including our four-legged friends. At the bottom of the funicular, you will find Saltburn Pier, which is complete with an arcade; the pier stretches 208 metres with plenty of seating along the way and the pier’s surrounding area offers plenty of refreshment stops, which makes it perfect for a day out at the seaside.
