This quiet, little-known location just outside of Matlock offers an incredibly peaceful surrounding where you can take a stroll through the woodland and listen to the relaxing sounds of the waterfalls.
This site is great for a casual walk or as part of a longer hike. The area surrounding the waterfall does have a lot of steps and some rather uneven terrain, so not suitable for cyclists; however, it is in close proximity to cycle paths.
There’s a number of walking routes, which are both family and dog friendly, and either pass by or through the valley – I’d recommend parking up opposite the Highfields Upper School nearby, where parking is free and then take a short walk (around half a mile) down to the valley.
You’ll notice some of the historic ruins along the way, dating back to the 1700s and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution – this area was once home to a series of mills which relied on water power from Bentley Brook; the Brook is the source of water for the array of stunning waterfalls.
Combine your trip to Lumsdale Falls with a trip to Black Rocks in Cromford (around 4 miles apart) to make the most of the day in the Derbyshire Peak District.
