Cannock Chase

Cannock Chase is one of England’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the smallest of mainland England at 26 square miles. It is complete with lakes and beautiful woodland trails, perfect for all kinds of activites, including cycling, running and walking. For the kids (and big kids), there is also an outdoor adventure company, Go Ape, set up a short distance from the Birches Valley Car Park; this Tree Top adventure park makes for a perfect family day out. Wherever you find yourself in Cannock Chase, you are guaranteed a stunning surrounding.

There are a number of routes and trails through Cannock Chase and you can select your route based on distance and activity. Plenty of signposts guide you to keep you on your chosen route and they are all colour coded. Here are some of the routes:

Walking/Cycling/Running Routes:
  • Ladyhill Trail – a short 1.6km/1mile circular route – mainly flat ground, so much more ideal for pushchairs and wheelchair users. Also complete with the Gruffalo Sculpture.
  • Fairoak Trail – a 4km/2.5miles circular route – follow the Green arrows on the signposts. Relatively easy walk for a range of fitness levels. It’s a multi-use trail, so ideal for all activities. 
  • Sherbrook Trail – There are two loops to choose from on this multi-use trail. Either Pepper Slade loop at 12km/7.5miles OR Abraham’s Valley loop at 20km/12.5miles. 
  • Chase Heritage Trail – This one is a linear trail and 16km/10miles in distance. This trail links 3 towns: Cannock, Hednesford and Rugeley.
 

There are also plenty of specific running trails to choose from based on distance: 3km, 5km, 7.5km and 10km. These are all signposted from Birches Valley Car Park, just follow the colour coded arrows for the route that suits you.

Cycling Routes:
  • Follow the Dog – A difficult mountain bike trail of 10.8km/6.7miles. This trail is for experienced mountain bikers.
  • The Monkey Trail – This trail starts out on the ‘Follow the Dog’ trail and then continues on a much longer route of 22.8km/14.2miles in total. Another trail for experienced mountain bikers.
There is an option to rent a bike from the bike hire near Birches Valley Car Park.
