Blackpool Tower • A World Wanderer

Blackpool Tower

Blackpool, Lancashire

Blackpool Tower is one of the most recognisable structures in England and has stood on the Fylde Coast since 1894. The tower was commissioned by the former Mayor of Blackpool, Sir John Bickerstaffe, following a trip to Paris, where he was so inspired by the Eiffel Tower, he wanted something just like it. The Tower was then designed by architects, James Maxwell and Charles Tuke, and building began in 1891; the structure took just under 3 years to build, however, neither Maxwell or Tuke were alive to see the finished product.

The Tower welcomes visitors and has so many activities to offer; it is particularly famous for its ballroom, which appears in every Strictly Come Dancing series. If dancing isn’t your thing, you might want to enjoy an afternoon tea in the ballroom or maybe have some fun at the circus. At the top of the tower (380ft high), you can enjoy stunning views of Blackpool and the coast; on a clear day, you might even see as far as the Lake District and the Isle of Man.

The iconic structure can be seen from anywhere in Blackpool, but I’d recommend heading down to the seafront for the best views of the tower. In front of the tower itself, you can also discover the Comedy Carpet which displays the names of 850 writers and comedians, complete with some of their best quotes and phrases.

Prices

Tickets for the Blackpool Tower can be purchased in advance online. Online ticket prices are as follows:

  • Adults (15+) – £13.95
  • Children (3-14) – £11.25
  • Group of 4 – £45.00

These prices are for the single attraction of either the Blackpool Tower Eye or the Blackpool Tower Circus. If you are planning a full day out in Blackpool, you might also want to consider a multi-attraction package ticket, which can also include Madame Tussauds and The Blackpool Tower Dungeon.

More details about single tickets and package tickets can be found here: Blackpool Tower website.

Remember that Kellogg’s and Cadbury’s often do promotional packaging, so check for codes to save some money.

Parking

There are a number of car parks in the area. I’d recommend parking at Houndshill Car Park (postcode: FY1 4NY), where there’s over 700 spaces and is only a short walk to the Tower. Parking costs are as follows:

  • 2 hours – £2.70
  • 3 hours – £3.70
  • 4 hours – £4.70
  • 6 hours – £7.00
  • 8 hours – £9.00
  • 24 hours – £12.00

Another nearby car park is Tower Street (postcode: FY1 4SH). Tower Street Car Park is a little cheaper, but has less parking spaces at around 80 spaces and a maximum of 4 hours stay.

  • 1 hours – £1.20
  • 2 hours – £2.20
  • 3 hours – £3.20
  • 4 hours – £4.20
