Black Rocks

Cromford, Derbyshire

Black Rocks is a stunning site located in the Derbyshire Peak District between Cromford and Wirksworth. It’s an amazing location for cyclists, hikers, rock climbers, or just about anyone who enjoys a scenic view.

If you’re visiting for the view, then you’ll find it a short (but steep) walk from the car park and depending on your fitness level, it may take as little as 5 minutes. Once at the top of the rock, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the Derwent Valley and you can spend as much time as you want at the top of the rocks – I’d recommend heading up early to avoid crowds of people visiting the site.

If you are a keen cyclist, hiker or horse rider, then Black Rocks is a great starting point for many trails around the charming Derbyshire countryside. One of the more challenging trails is the route of the old High Peak Railway, which is known simply as the High Peak Trail. This trail is around 17 miles long and does contain some rather demanding terrain, but in return, you’ll be rewarded with stunning scenery.

However, for those of you thinking 17 miles is a little ambitious, you can begin with a much shorter and less challenging trail. You may find the Green route, at around a mile long, or the Blue route, at around 2 miles long, much more manageable. You will even find the starting point for the Wirksworth Trail, which is around 5 miles long. No matter what route you choose, you are guaranteed the surroundings of the delightful Derbyshire countryside.
