Baslow Edge

Hope Valley, Derbyshire

Baslow Edge is a gritstone edge located in the Peak District. It is an easy route to access and rewards walkers with incredible views. This location is versatile, so can be a short family-friendly walk, or part of a much longer and more challenging route. The walk along Baslow Edge is not particularly difficult, although the ground is uneven, so comfortable shoes or walking boots are recommended.

Baslow Edge offers some incredible views over Derwent Valley and on a clear day, you can even see the stunning Chatsworth House. You can begin the walk from the Curbar Edge Car Park (details below); take a right turn from the car park and cross the road, you will see an obvious track and a gate to go through. Upon passing through the gate, the path will go in two directions, stay to the right.

A short distance down the path will take you to a viewpoint; which will offer some stunning landscape views for miles! Unless, like me, you visit on a foggy morning…

Continuing on the same path for roughly 1.5km, you will stumble across Wellington’s Monument; this monument was erected in honour of the Duke of Wellington for his victory in the Battle of Waterloo (1815).

From the monument, you can turn around and return the way you walked; this will be around a 3-3.5km walk in total. The walk is suitable for families, couples, solo hikers, and obviously your four-legged friends. If you are taking children, ensure they are always supervised and away from the edge. Baslow Edge can also be incorporated into a much longer walk, including the 9 Edges Walk; this walk begins at Ladybower Reservoir and is a total of 23 miles!

Baslow Edge is a great Peak District walk and achievable for beginners too. I would allow for 45 minutes to 1 hour to do the short walk, especially if you are stopping to take photos. You may also come across the popular Highland Cow, who regularly graze in this area. While they are stunning to see, it is always wise to be mindful of them.
