Bamford Edge

Hope Valley, Derbyshire

Bamford Edge – a gritstone overhang located in the beautiful Peak District, more specifically in Hope Valley, North Derbyshire. Its highest point stands at 1381ft and provides some of the best views of Ladybower Reservoir and certainly worth the hike. For an experienced hiker, this is an easy route and not particularly long either. While it is a steep hike, it is an achievable route for someone inexperienced too.

If you’re like me and are visiting for the stunning views and a bit of exercise, I’d recommend parking on New Road; the easiest way to get there is from Ashopton Road (A6013), turn on to New Road and travel approximately a mile to park up on the left-hand side. Your hike will begin at the stile on the left and you’ll be greeted with a well-trodden track that’ll take you right to your destination. Don’t forget to wear comfortable walking boots/trainers as the terrain is a little uneven. And more importantly, don’t forget your camera to capture the incredible views that Bamford Edge has to offer – plenty of amazing photo opportunities too!

For a longer and slightly more challenging route, you could incorporate Derwent Edge and Stanage Edge (3 Edges), or even head down to Ladybower Reservoir and discover some delightful woodland trails. Not only is Bamford Edge a popular hiking location, it’s also very popular for climbing – take a look at UK Climbing for more information.

Parking

  • For a bit of sightseeing, park up on New Road – it’s free to park here and a great place to start your hike.
  • You could also park up at Ladybower Reservoir and take a longer hike around the Reservoir and Bamford Edge – there are several locations to park alongside the Reservoir, but can get busy very quickly, I’d recommend heading there early. Postcode for the car park is S33 0AQ.
