Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh, Northumberland

Bamburgh Castle is located in the village of Bamburgh and is arguably one of the most iconic locations in the North East; it is an impressive castle which stands dramatically above the Northumberland coastline and its earliest records suggest it dates back to around the 6th century. It was once known as ‘Bebbanburg’ by the Anglo-Saxons and the location was chosen as the capital of Northumbria, one of the seven kingdoms. The castle has been involved in many battles and has been destroyed and rebuilt a number of times.

In more recent history, the castle has been featured in a number of films and tv shows, including ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’, ‘The BFG’, and ‘The Last Kingdom’. The castle is currently owned by the Armstrong family and has been within the family since 1894, when William Armstrong purchased the property for £60,000; nowadays, the Armstrong family welcome thousands of visitors every year to discover its incredible history. If you don’t want a day out within the castle walls, then there’s plenty of opportunity to enjoy the view from the sandy Bamburgh Beach.
