Angel of the North

Gateshead, Tyne and Wear

The Angel of the North is an iconic structure in the North East of England that attracts many visitors every year. The sculpture was commissioned by Gateshead Council and then designed by Sir Antony Gormley; it was constructed at a cost of £800,000 and has been standing in Gateshead since 1998. It can be seen from quite the distance due to its 20 metre height and 54 metre width, and for this reason it’s hard to miss the 208-tonne structure.
