Aira Force Waterfall

Matterdale, Cumbria

Aira Force stands as a mesmerizing natural waterfall situated within the Lake District region. It is under the ownership and care of the National Trust, representing one of the most renowned waterfalls in this picturesque area. Additionally, it serves as a habitat for our indigenous red squirrel species. Aira Force is formed by the convergence of several streams and smaller cascades, culminating in a breathtaking 20-meter drop into the pool beneath, resulting in a truly remarkable spectacle. As you follow the trail, you’ll come across observation points that offer the opportunity to marvel at the captivating essence of Aira Force. An elevated bridge provides an extraordinary vantage point to absorb the ambiance and witness the forceful descent of the water. Alternatively, there’s a lower viewing platform that offers a comprehensive perspective of the entirety of Aira Force.

There are multiple pathways encircling Aira Force, yet I would suggest opting for the ascent on the trail. This pathway boasts a serene and exquisite ambience, with the primary auditory backdrop being the rushing water, resulting in a tranquil atmosphere. A brief interval into your stroll (approximately 10 minutes), you will encounter an elevated observation point, providing an opportunity to pause and fully absorb the grandeur of Aira Force. Ensure that the stream consistently remains on your right side as you continue along the wooded trail. Afterwards, you will arrive at another bridge; proceed over it, continuing along the opposite side. This will eventually lead you to the lower observation platform, thus concluding your circular route. The trail spans approximately 1.5 miles in length, and I would recommend allotting approximately 2 hours for your excursion. While it is feasible to complete the route at a faster pace, dedicating this amount of time allows for leisurely pauses to admire the waterfall and capture numerous photographs.

The trail is straightforward to navigate and doesn’t pose excessive challenges; nevertheless, it’s advisable to wear comfortable walking footwear such as boots or shoes. Certain segments of the trail feature uneven terrain, which might prove less suitable for individuals who aren’t steady on their feet. Should you find yourself short on time, a suggestion would be to cross at the initial bridge (the viewing platform) and consequently form a circular route in this manner. This offers an excellent alternative for experiencing and appreciating the waterfall without requiring a substantial time investment.
